In 11th grade, I played John Fay a Worlocks (Grateful Dead's first name)
song, "Can't Come Down", from '66 on my walkman. He said, "If you like that, then check this out", then played me The Litter,
Creation, and the 13th Floor Elevators. Days later, we went to Orin Portnoy's place to form Disturbed.
John and I both moved on, but when I got a call from a friend in Connecticut
to see about booking the Fuzztones at his boarding school, somehow the Outta' Place thing quickly came about so I could play
the show too. I think John's parents were the reason he wasn't involved, and it was only going to be a one time gig. But four
months later in the summer of '83, Chandler called and said his friend, Dave Herrera wanted us to play a show with them at
this dive, called The Dive
The Fuzztones glommed on to our new haunt. John formed The Tryfles. History
was in the making. And I blew off college to make the now universally revered Outta' Place EPs.
