David John Herrera - Guitar & vocals: The Cheepskates

Monday night was audition night at the Dive. An audition consisted of bands bringing in a tape which was given a cursory listen, followed by setting up a weeknight date. Though the club was "dark" on these nights the bar was open until about eight or nine o'clock.
By the middle of '83 Glenn (the owner) and I had struck up a pretty good friendship. When the auditions had ended we would sometimes go out to dinner (Mary Ann's comes to mind) before parting ways for the evening. Occasionally on slow nights we would sit, drink scotch, and talk long after the doors had been locked.
On one particular Monday after he had closed I asked Glenn if he would like to join Michael Chandler and I for dinner. Chandler was living at his bandmate Jordan Tarlow's apartment a few blocks away. Glenn said he had a lot of paper work to catch up on but suggested we fire up the kitchen in the back and have dinner right there. He'd supply the drinks if we supplied the food. So in typical NYC fashion we threw a menu together and went out looking for lobsters to cook at ten o'clock in the evening.
There was just enough cook ware to accommodate four lobsters with rice and baked potatoes. While Chandler was preparing a salad (he always was prttey good in the kitchen) Jordan and I started arranging some tables together in the middle of the stage. When Glenn saw this he started adjusting the stage lighting to illuminate the setting while keeping the rest of the club dark.
I don't think we started eating until sometime after twelve but I know we didn't stop talking (solving all of the world's problems of course) until well after two or three.
We all agreed to get together once a month but never did. I think we all knew that trying relive a spur of the moment decision was just never going to be quite right. And why risk ruining a perfectly good memory.
